The 150 residents and day-care patients of Boikhuco Old Age Home in Bochabela had a reason to smile about when the Mangaung Metro’s in partnership with the Universitas Hospital delivered health screening tests to their doorstep on Thursday, 06 June.

In an outreach campaign initiated by the Acting General Manager: Social Services, Mr Billy Barnes and the Acting Manager for Community Development, Me. Morwa Letsaba, a team of student doctors and professional nurses from Universitas Hospital tested the elderly for illnesses such as glucose, blood pressure, eyesight, hearing and a full body checkup.

“This is a support program to the elderly home care centres within the Mangaung Metro Municipal area; this is one of the objectives of the Community Development Division,” Me Letsaba said.

Besides helping the student doctors with their community-based training, they also got a chance to see their patients in their environment, which is very rare. This helps them understand the obstacles elderly people face daily for an example, their supervisor Dr. Amanda van der Horst, said about their involvement.

Officials from the municipality also joined the centres management in celebrating the 100th birthday of Me. Thabure, the eldest resident at the centre.
According to the division, similar outreach campaigns will be conducted in Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo.
